Life After San Francisco State University
This is my very first blog post and possibly the very first blog I’ve ever created (Xanga doesn’t really count, does it?).
Before I start blogging, I’d like to introduce myself to the World Wide Web.
Instead of going in-depth about my entire life starting from how I was like as a kid or who my favorite Power Ranger was (it was the Red Ranger by the way), I’ll jump right ahead to a few months back, August 2009.
Since I was about two semesters behind from graduating on time (four years), I had to push myself year after year by taking more classes per semester and attending summer classes. I was originally planning to major in Marketing and Decision Science, but found out that I was only allowed to major in one concentration due to the budget cuts the California school system was been facing.
So that was it. After wasting time by taking Decision Science classes, I was forced to graduate with just a bachelor’s in Business Administration; concentrating in Marketing. After four years in total, on August 2009, I had finally reached the so called end of my academic career. So now what?
The economy is in a recession. Jobs and wages are being slashed. The unemployment rate is soaring. Schools are accepting less students, increasing tuition, and cutting classes. Oh what a perfect time to graduate. So here I am, with barely any experience in the Marketing field, I am at the bottom of the barrel to be picked by any company.
So what are my options? Let’s see.
1) Sit at home, crying about how the economy sucks and all the time I’ve wasted in college. Then going out to get piss drunk at the bar every night, hoping that I’ll run into a hiring manager at Google or Pixar that desperately needs someone like me and offers me a six-figure job with benefits on the spot. Yeah right.
2) Search job postings on Craigslist and Monster and sending out cover letters and resumes to anyone who’ll take a look at it. Kind of did that.
Or..
3) Reach a general understanding that the economy blows and just like everyone else, I’ll just have to wait until things start picking up before I start actively applying for jobs again. Continue working at my current job, even though the pay isn’t that great. And actively participate in Marketing related and resume-boosting activities like reading books on Search Engine Optimization and doing anything else to create my own experiences that I can one day talk about during an interview. And this is exactly what I’m doing.
Thus, this is one of the many reasons why I’ve decided to create this blog. This blog will allow me to have something to show to potential employers if they ever need to see a writing sample or what not. I can also polish up on my writing skills here too. So I’ll be posting about anything from business ideas, product reviews, to current events and the things I did last weekend. I will try to keep this as professional as I can, but no promises.
This is my life after San Francisco State University and I’m ready!
